Relationships between body image, dyadic coping and post-traumatic growth in breast cancer patients: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundThe diagnosis and treatment of cancer triggers not only a negative psychological response for the patient, but also a positive psychological outcome. Positive dyadic coping, as a form of coping for mental health outcomes, can maintain or reestablish internal stability between the patient and his or her spouse, resulting in positive physical and psychological changes. However, there is a paucity of research on body image, dyadic coping, and post-traumatic growth in breast cancer patients. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship and pathways between body image, dyadic coping, and post-traumatic growth in breast cancer patients.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2022 to November 2023 at a tertiary care hospital in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China. This study was conducted among 154 breast cancer patients treated at the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University, all of whom completed demographic and clinical information questionnaires, Body image self-rating questionnaire for breast cancer (BISQ-BC), Dyadic Coping Inventory (DCI) and Post Traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI). A Pearson correlation analysis was used to explore the relationship between body image, dyadic coping, and post-traumatic growth. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the path relationships among the three and to explore the mediating role of dyadic coping.ResultsThe level of body image was negatively correlated with post-traumatic growth (r = −0.462, p < 0.01); and the level of body image was negatively correlated with dyadic coping (r = −0.308, p < 0.01). And dyadic coping was positively associated with post-traumatic growth (r = 0.464, p < 0.01). The structural equation modeling results supported the mediation model with the following model fit indices, chi-square to degrees of freedom ratio (χ2/df = 2.05), goodness of fit index (GFI = 0.93), comparative fit index (CFI = 0.99), canonical fit index (NFI = 0.93), incremental fit index (IFI = 0.99), non-canonical fit index (TLI = 0.99) and the root mean square of the difference in approximation error (RMSEA = 0.03). Body image and dyadic coping directly affected post-traumatic growth (β = −0.33, p < 0.05; β = 0.43, p < 0.05). And body image indirectly influenced post-traumatic growth through dyadic coping (β = −0.17, p < 0.05).ConclusionInterconnections between body image, dyadic coping, and post-traumatic growth in breast cancer patients. A preliminary validation of the mediating role of dyadic coping between body image and post-traumatic growth, body image can have an impact on dyadic coping, which in turn can have an impact on post-traumatic growth. Whereby higher levels of dyadic coping in patients may also be associated with higher levels of post-traumatic growth, whereas body image disturbance may impede levels of post-traumatic growth.

The relationship between family resilience, post-traumatic growth, and caregiver burden among family caregivers of stroke survivors: a cross-sectional study

ABSTRACT The study aimed to explore the relationship between family resilience, post-traumatic growth(PTG), and caregiver burden among family caregivers of stroke survivors. Researchers conducted a cross-sectional study to recruit 253 family caregivers of stroke survivors from a public hospital in Shandong Province, China. Caregivers completed sociodemographic information, the Shortened Chinese Version of the Family Resilience Assessment Scale, the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory, and the Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview. We used Amos 24.0 to construct structural equation models and examine the mediating effects of stroke survivors’ post-traumatic growth. Family resilience was positively associated with post-traumatic growth, and both family resilience and post-traumatic growth were negatively associated with caregiver burden. Post-traumatic growth partially mediated the relationship between family resilience and caregiver burden, and the mediating effect accounted for 21.27% of the total effect. Targeted interventions should address family resilience and post-traumatic growth as protective factors of caregiver burden.

Nursing intervention and quality feedback guided by stress system theory in neurological function recovery and post-traumatic growth of patients with acute primary cerebral hemorrhage

Objective: To explore the effect of nursing intervention and quality feedback guided by stress system theory on neurological function recovery and post-traumatic growth in patients with cerebral hemorrhage. Methods: 120 patients with cerebral hemorrhage admitted to our hospital from October 2022 to November 2023 were selected, 47 patients in the control group received routine medical care, and 73 patients in the observation group were added nursing intervention measures under the guidance of stress system theory on this basis. The effects of the intervention were evaluated by Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), Barthel index (BI) and Chinese scale of clinical neurological impairment in stroke patients (CSS). Results: After intervention, the PTGI score in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05). The SAS and SDS scores were significantly lower than those of the control group (P < 0.001), indicating that the nursing intervention effectively alleviated the anxiety and depression of patients. At the same time, the BI index of the observation group was significantly increased, and the CSS score was significantly decreased (P < 0.001), indicating that the patients' self-care ability of daily life and the recovery level of neurological function were significantly improved. Conclusion: Nursing intervention and quality feedback strategy under the guidance of stress system theory can effectively improve the neurological recovery ability and post-traumatic growth level of patients with cerebral hemorrhage, and has a significant effect on improving the psychological state and quality of life of patients.

The prevalence and factors of posttraumatic growth among nurses based on the PTGI: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The urgency and risk of clinical nursing may cause nurses to experience traumatic stress, but it may also lead to posttraumatic growth. However, no study has comprehensively analyzed the prevalence of posttraumatic growth among nurses using a unified outcome measure and a validated assessment tool. This study aims to systematically assess the prevalence and factors of posttraumatic growth among nurses based on the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI). Ten databases, including The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, Springerlink, Embase, Chinese Biomedical (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WanFang, and VIP databases, were searched as of December 31, 2022. The prevalence of posttraumatic growth was pooled using Stata 17.0 software. The PRISMA guideline was used to report the systematic review and meta-analysis. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42022365620. A total of 30 studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis, consisting of 14,022 nurses worldwide from four countries. In our study, the pooled mean score of posttraumatic growth among nurses was 66.34 (95% CI: 61.25-71.43). From 2015 to 2022, nurses' posttraumatic growth levels gradually increased. In addition, Turkey nurses have the lowest posttraumatic growth levelnurses who experienced workplace violence have a lower posttraumatic growth level compared with other nurses; while nurses aged over 30 and male have higher posttraumatic growth levels. While several studies on the prevalence of posttraumatic growth among nurses have been published, the reported data are quite different. Our systematic review and meta-analysis found that nurses' posttraumatic growth level was "moderate," and nurses' posttraumatic growth may vary based on publication year, country, traumatic event, age, and gender. Our findings may provide a theoretical basis for hospital administrators and policy makers to scientifically manage human resources, comprehensively evaluate nurses' mental health, and promote nurses' posttraumatic growth in different traumatic events, which is conducive to the formulation and implementation of relevant policy guidelines.

Network analysis of posttraumatic stress and posttraumatic growth symptoms among women in subsequent pregnancies following pregnancy loss

BackgroundPregnant women who have undergone pregnancy loss often display both posttraumatic stress (PTS) and posttraumatic growth (PTG). However, the precise relationship and structure of symptomatic levels of PTS and PTG have not been well understood. This study aimed to assess the associations between PTS and PTG symptoms in women during subsequent pregnancies following a previous pregnancy loss.MethodsA total of 406 pregnant women with a history of pregnancy loss were included in this study. The Impact of Events Scale-6 (IES-6) and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory Short Form (PTGI-SF) were used to assess symptoms of PTS and PTG, respectively. The Graphical Gaussian Model was employed to estimate the network model. Central symptoms and bridge symptoms were identified based on “expected influence” and “bridge expected influence” indices, respectively. The stability and accuracy of the network were examined using the case-dropping procedure and nonparametric bootstrapped procedure.ResultsThe network analysis identified PTG3 (“Ability to do better things”) as the most central symptom, followed by PTS3 (“Avoidance of thoughts”) and PTG6 (“New path for life”) in the sample. Additionally, PTS3 (“Avoidance of thoughts”) and PTG9 (“Perception of greater personal strength”) were bridge symptoms linking PTS and PTG clusters. The network structure was robust in stability and accuracy tests.ConclusionsInterventions targeting the central symptoms identified, along with key bridge symptoms, have the potential to alleviate the severity of PTS experienced by women with a history of pregnancy loss and promote their personal growth.

Mental health in genocide: Balancing between posttraumatic distress and growth among displaced Yazidi mothers

Background. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) committed genocide of the Yazidis in Sinjar 2014, resulting in dispersion and enslavement. Research shows severe mental health problems, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among survivors, but less is known about their resources and strengths, conceptualized as posttraumatic growth (PTG). Aims. are to examine the balance between symptoms and strengths among Yazidi women caring for their infants by identifying groups differing in PTSD and PTG, and analyze how demographic, obstetric, and infant-related factors associate with the groups. Method. Participants were 283 Yazidi mothers with their 1-18-month-old infants displaced in Kurdish Region of North Iraq. PTSD symptoms were measured by Harvard Trauma Questionnaire and PTG by the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Results. identified four groups: “Severe symptoms and low growth” (39%), “Low symptoms and moderate growth” (38%), “Moderate symptoms and very high growth” (13%), and “Moderate symptoms and low growth” (10%). Low education, economic difficulties and obstetric problems related to the “Severe symptoms and low growth” group, whereas newborn and infant health problems did not have an impact. Conclusion. Effective help for genocide survivors should both alleviate suffering and encourage resources through tools of recreating a sense of cultural security and pride.

Associations of illness perception and social support with fear of progression in young and middle-aged adults with digestive system cancer: A cross-sectional study

PurposeWhile Fear of progression (FoP) is a natural reaction in cancer, elevated FoP can impact life quality and social function. Our study aims to explore how illness perception, social support, and posttraumatic growth influence patients' FoP. MethodsThis study enrolled 243 young and middle-aged adults with digestive system cancer at a hospital in Guangzhou from November 2022 to November 2023. In this study, the measurement instruments utilized included The Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form, The Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, The 12-item Perceived Social Support Scale, and The 21-item Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Data was analyzed employing polynomial regression and response surface analyses. ResultsThe mean score of FoP was 35.45 ± 10.05, and 59.3% of the cancers (scores≥34) had clinically dysfunctional levels of FoP. Regarding congruence, patients' FoP was higher when the levels of illness perception and social support were both low or high than when the levels were both intermediate. Regarding incongruence, patients' FoP was lower when the level of illness perception was low and social support was high compared with when the level of illness perception was high and social support was low. Additionally, posttraumatic growth moderated the (in)congruence effect of illness perception-social support on the FoP of patients. ConclusionsLow or high illness perception-social support congruence was detrimental to the FoP of patients. Low illness perception-high social support incongruence was beneficial to patients' FoP. Posttraumatic growth can be a positive factor for enhancing the impact of low illness perception-high social support incongruence on patients' FoP.

Religiosity as a Predictor of Post-traumatic Growth and Psychological Distress among Heart Patients: Mediating Role of Perceived Social Support

Objectives: This study investigates the indirect effect of religiosity on post-traumatic growth and psychological distress through perceived social support among heart patients. Methodology: A cross-sectional research design was employed, gathering data from a purposive sample of 140 heart patients, with equal representation of both men and women, from public and private hospitals in Sargodha. Data collection utilized the Urdu-translated versions of the Short Muslim Practice and Belief Scale, Interpersonal Support Evaluation List, Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory, and DASS-21 to assess religiosity, perceived social support, post-traumatic growth, and psychological distress, respectively. Results: Perceived social support significantly mediated the relationship between religiosity and post-traumatic growth, amplifying the strength of this association. Additionally, it mediated the relationship between religiosity and psychological distress by alleviating the negative impact on psychological health. Conclusion: This study illuminates the positive influence of religiosity on social support while simultaneously mitigating psychological distress among heart patients. Moreover, perceived social support not only diminishes distress but also fosters post-traumatic growth, serving as a vital mediator in these dynamics. These findings offer insights for interventions aimed at leveraging religiosity and social support to enhance mental well-being in this population.

Promoting post-traumatic growth in cancer patients: a randomized controlled trial of guided written disclosure.

BackgroundCancer is a life-threatening disease that triggers not only vulnerability to distressing symptoms but also a meaning-making process that may lead to post-traumatic growth. As people often struggle to integrate cancer illness into their meaning system to reach an adaptive meaning, psychological interventions focused on a reappraisal of the illness experience can facilitate this process. This multicenter randomized controlled trial (RCT) was primarily aimed at assessing the efficacy of a writing intervention known as a guided disclosure protocol (GDP), compared to a generic writing intervention, in promoting post-traumatic growth in stage I-III breast and colon cancer patients at the end of their adjuvant chemotherapy.MethodsBetween January 2016 and August 2020 recruitment of eligible subjects took place during follow-up clinical consultations. Assessment occurred at baseline (T0), after the intervention (T1, 3 months from baseline), and at 6 months from baseline (T2). Both interventions consisted of three 20-min writing sessions to be performed once every two weeks. Change in post-traumatic growth was assessed using the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, meaning with the Constructed Meaning Scale, and psychological distress with the Impact of Event Scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale.ResultsIn the five participating centers, 102 eligible patients were randomized and 72 participants completed follow-up evaluation. Most patients were women (79.4%), had breast cancer (68.6%), and stage I (27.5%), or stage II (44.1%) disease. Mean differences did not reach statistical significance for any of the dependent variables. However, an effect of the GDP, although not statistically relevant, was observed after the intervention in terms of enhanced post-traumatic growth and increased distress measured with the Impact of Event Scale.ConclusionThis is the first RCT investigating the efficacy of a GDP in cancer patients having post-traumatic growth as the primary aim. Though GDP is a promising intervention in promoting post-traumatic growth, the lack of statistical significance of our findings may be due to the study being underpowered, hence this trial should be replicated with an adequate sample size, paying attention to supporting recruitment.Clinical trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier: 2015/0024360.

Exploratory factor analysis of shared trauma in psychiatric-mental health nurses using the Shared Trauma Professional Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (STPPG)

IntroductionThe Shared Trauma Professional Post Traumatic Growth Inventory (STPPG) was developed by Tosone et al. (2014) to help understand shared trauma (ST) in social workers. ST occurs when the healthcare professional and client both experience the same collective traumatic event. This inventory has been adapted for use with mental health nurses. A cross-sectional study of N = 552 mental health nurses was completed in the spring of 2023 to assess the feasibility of using the STPPG to explore shared trauma in mental health nurses. MethodsAn exploratory factor analysis was run for the STPPG using squared multiple correlations with the maximum likelihood method. ResultsThe alpha coefficient ranged from 0.82 to 0.89 for 2-factors and 0.73 to 0.89 for 3-factors. The results indicated that all correlations were significant among the total scales and subscales. All correlations were positive, ranging from 0.81 to 0.95 for two factors and 0.58 to 0.89 for three factors. ConclusionThe STPPG has confirmed a two-factor analysis for mental health nurses. The STPPG is a valid inventory to measure ST in mental health nurses and will allow the concept to be further studied.

Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and posttraumatic growth among college students with a history of childhood maltreatment in China: A latent profile analysis.

Childhood maltreatment is prevalent in China, and research indicates that trauma-exposed individuals may exhibit concurrent negative and positive posttraumatic psychological responses. To examine the co-occurring patterns of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and posttraumatic growth (PTG) among college students in China having a history of childhood maltreatment. Participants (N = 2,968) were college students from China who had experienced childhood maltreatment and had completed the PTSD Checklist, a PTG inventory, and a childhood maltreatment questionnaire. The results revealed four heterogeneous profiles characterized by low symptoms (n = 666, 22.4%), growth (n = 960, 32.3%), struggle (n = 1,285, 43.3%), and distress (n = 57, 1.9%). The three-step approach revealed emotional abuse and sexual abuse as crucial risk factors for the distress profile. In addition, age, sex, parental education, and forms of childhood maltreatment play distinctive roles in the four profiles of posttraumatic reactions. Posttraumatic reactions exhibit heterogeneous characteristics among Chinese college students exposed to childhood maltreatment, and professionals provide the service targeting their needs. The mental health and well-being implications of a mesothelioma diagnosis: A mixed methods study

PurposeMesothelioma is an incurable, asbestos-related cancer with a poor prognosis. There is scant evidence about the mental health and well-being impacts on patients and carers living with the illness. This study aimed to investigate mesothelioma's impact on mental health and well-being and the scale of mental health conditions in patients and informal carers. MethodsA mixed-methods design was used: a cross-sectional survey of mesothelioma patients and informal carers plus semi-structured interviews with patients and carers. The survey used validated scales collecting data on mental health aspects of mesothelioma: the EQ5D to assess health-related quality-of-life; the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale; the PCL-5 to assess Posttraumatic Stress; and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. The datasets were integrated during analysis. Results96 useable survey responses were received. A clinical level of depression was reported by 29 participants (30.21%), of anxiety by 48 (50%), of posttraumatic distress disorder by 32 (33.33%), and of posttraumatic growth by 34 (35.42%). Carers had worse scores than patients. Three main themes were developed from interviews with 10 patients and 11 carers: ‘Prognosis’, ‘Support from services’, and ‘Social connections and communication’. ConclusionsHealthcare professionals delivering a mesothelioma diagnosis require regular training in communication skills plus updating in current treatment options, so they provide an appropriate mix of realism and hope. Better signposting to mental health support is needed for patients and carers. Our introduction of posttraumatic growth into the mesothelioma literature is novel. We recommend specialist nurses are trained to recognise, understand, and foster posttraumatic growth.

Posttraumatic growth, posttraumatic depreciation and beyond: Exploring the applicability of quantitative measures in Sierra Leone

Background and objectivesPeople report of both, posttraumatic growth (PTG) and posttraumatic depreciation (PTD) after experiencing traumatic events. This study's aim in Sierra Leone was to explore the applicability of the expanded Posttraumatic Growth and Depreciation Inventory (PTGDI-X) and to examine the relationship between PTG and PTD, alongside predictive theory-driven variables. We also investigated communal and societal PTG, using the Individual and Collective Posttraumatic Growth Scale (ICPTGS). MethodThe PTGDI-X factorial structure was evaluated by confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) of data of 280 students who met DSM-5 trauma criteria. 219 participants, indicating that the event affected their community, and 113 participants, reporting it to have transformed the Sierra Leonean society, answered to the ICPTGS. ResultsThe PTGDI-X factor structure, proposed as cross-culturally invariant, was not applicable to the Sierra Leonean sample, but the use of the instrument's total scores was. PTG and PTD were found to co-exist, with predictive variables showing significant impacts on both constructs (e.g., disclosure, core beliefs disruption). Collective PTG outcomes in Sierra Leone were confirmed. ConclusionThe findings indicated to measure PTG and PTD together, however top-down approaches to reveal only limited culture-specific insights. A broader conceptualization of growth, beyond the personal level was recommended.

The Relationship Between Body Image and Psychological Well-Being with Post-traumatic Growth in Women with Breast Cancer and a History of Mastectomy

Background: Despite the challenging nature of cancer, research has indicated that the battle against this illness can lead to positive transformations following diagnosis and treatment, a phenomenon known as post-traumatic growth. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the association between body image and mental well-being and post-traumatic growth among women who have undergone breast cancer treatment and mastectomy surgery. Methods: Employing a correlational research design, this study sampled 276 participants, focusing on married women in Tehran who have experienced mastectomy. The instruments used included McKinley and Hyde's Body Image Scale (1996), the Ryff Scale of Psychological Well-Being 1989 (RSPWB-18), and the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) by Tedeschi. Results: Data analysis was conducted using Pearson's correlation test and multivariate regression analysis. The findings revealed a significant association between psychological well-being and post-traumatic growth in women (P &lt; 0.01). Conclusions: The results underscore the importance of incorporating an understanding of the relationship between these variables into the development of educational and psychological interventions, integrating them with treatment plans for patients post-breast cancer surgery.

Psychological predictors of the time perspective: The role of posttraumatic stress disorder, posttraumatic growth, and temporal triggers in a sample of bereaved adults.

The process of coping with loss and trauma is inextricably linked with subjective experiences and perceptions of time. The Time Perspective Framework, suggests that temporal frames influence an individual's actions, judgements, and the decisions that they make. Similarly, time perspective has been linked with psychosocial outcomes of trauma and loss (e.g. posttraumatic stress disorder). The aim of this study is to identify factors that may influence survivor's time perspective in order to determine if posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), posttraumatic growth (PTG), and temporal triggers (MIT) influenced different time perspective orientations. Data was collected via Qualtrics survey between July 2019 and July 2020. Measures included basic demographic characteristics, posttraumatic stress disorder checklist, posttraumatic growth inventory, an assessment of temporal triggers, and the Zimbardo time perspective inventory. A series of OLS regression analyses were estimated. PTG was positively associated with future time perspective scores, whereas PTSD was associated with an increase in past negative orientation. The endorsement of temporal triggers like markers in time was negatively associated with present hedonistic scores and positively associated with future time perspective scores. Interestingly, PTSD, PTG and the endorsement of MIT were not associated with present time perspective scores. Identifying the relationship between PTSD, PTG, marker in time, and time perspective may offer important insights into treatment modalities that can improve outcomes for bereaved individuals. We discuss limitations of the current analysis and make recommendations for future research.

Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Post-Traumatic Growth: A Cross-Sectional Study of Psychiatric Nurses Suffering from Workplace Violence in Guangdong China.

Workplace violence (WPV) had become an important issue that endangered the occupational safety of psychiatric nurses. A growing number of studies showed positive post-traumatic growth (PTG) resulting from coping with trauma. To investigate the characteristics of PTG in psychiatric nurses who experienced violence in the workplace and analyze its influencing factors. A total of 1202 psychiatric nurses participated in the study. From October 2022 to December 2022, this cross-sectional study collected data on psychiatric nurses from five tertiary hospitals in Guangdong Province, China. Twenty-item Chinese version post-traumatic growth inventory (PTGI), Jefferson Scale of Empathy Health Professional (JSE-HP), Confidence in Coping with Patient Aggression Instrument (CCPAI), Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C), and Connor-Davidson ResilienceScale (CD-RISC) measured PTG level, empathy, the confidence in coping with WPV, post-traumatic stress disorder, and resilience, respectively.Bivariate analysis and multiple linear regression explored potential influencing factors of PTG. This study complies with the EQUATOR (STROBE) checklist. The sample was composed of a total of 1202 psychiatric nurses suffering from WPV. The average score of PTGI in psychiatric nurses was above average (65.75 points; SD = 20.20). Linear regression analyses showed from single-child family (β=0.052,95% CI=0.342,5.409, P<0.05), education background (β=0.108,95% CI=1.833,5.097, P<0.001), the confidence in coping with patient aggression (β=0.106,95% CI=1.385,4.317, P<0.001), empathy (β=0.057,95% CI=0.312,4.374, P<0.05), and resilience (β=0.484,95% CI=7.737,9.575, P<0.001) were associated with PTG level. Psychiatric nurses who were non-single child, had received higher education, had confidence in coping with patient aggression, had good resilience and strong empathy were prone to PTG after experiencing WPV. The study findings could help hospitals and nursing managers identify vulnerable individuals and take early intervention measures against such populations.

Prospective cohort study of unmet supportive care needs, post-traumatic growth, coping strategy and social supports among patients with breast cancer: The PenBCNeeds study

Purpose While the unmet healthcare needs are still being improved upon, the wellbeing of cancer patients has increasingly become a prime concern in Malaysia. The objective of this study is to ascertain the trend of unmet supportive care needs, post-traumatic growth (P T G), coping strategies, and social supports among patients with breast cancer over the three time points of treatment: T1 at early diagnosis, T2 for three months after diagnosis, and T3 for six months after diagnosis. Methods A total of 240 cancer patients participated in this prospective cohort study, with follow-up visits from October 2019 until July 2021. Data were collected using several instruments: Brief COP E, the Source of Social Support Scale (SSSS), the Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory - Short Form (P T GI-SF), and a Malay version of the 34-Item Shortform Supportive Care Need Survey (SCNS-SF34). Results The results indicated a significant change from T1 to T3 for all domains of the unmet needs (p-value < 0.001), except for the sexual domain. A lower SCNS-SF34 score resulted from more unfavorable social support. The P T GI-SF results indicated a trend toward meeting the unmet needs, and a higher SCNS-SF-34 score predicted a considerably higher P T GI-SF score. Conclusions Our study findings suggest that majority of the factors evaluated in terms of unmet needs among cancer patients have undergone considerable changes.

Do relationships with parents determine citizens’ reactions to war trauma?

BackgroundThe article concerns the psychology of trauma: the intensity of the experienced threats and reactions to the trauma in the form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), defenses and post-traumatic growth (PTG) in Ukrainian immigrants in Poland. The issues of trauma psychology were studied in connection with the relationships with parents.Participants and procedureThe methods used mainly concerned the specifics of experiencing strong threats (trauma) and responding to them (PCL-5 questionnaire, Psycho-Social and Psychic Defenses Questionnaire, Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory), determination of closeness to parents (Scale of Closeness to Biological Parents) and secure and non-secure attachment style (Attachment Style Questionnaire). The subjects were 178 people (including 147 women and 31 men), citizens of Ukraine, who arrived in Poland after the outbreak of war on February 24, 2022, and at the time of the study were living in and around Krakow, Wroclaw, Lublin, or Warsaw. The mean age of the subjects was 38 years (SD = 12.57).ResultsThe results of the study indicate that non-secure attachment styles (anxious-avoidant and anxious-ambivalent), along with frustration of the need for competence and intensity of threats, are predictors of PTSD and non-constructive defenses. In contrast, a secure attachment style, along with frustration of the need for competence and intensity of threats, is a predictor of constructive defenses, while a secure attachment style is a predictor of PTG. Statistical analyses show that closeness to the mother is not significantly associated with any of the explained variables.ConclusionsThe accumulation of risks associated with war trauma and the necessity to cope with them are strongly associated with the ongoing war. Attachment styles support or hinder the process of adaptation. The absence of closeness to the mother among the predictors in the models tested represents the most intriguing result, to be confirmed in further research.

Relationship among post-traumatic growth, spiritual well-being, and perceived social support in Chinese women with gynecological cancer

This study aimed to examine the correlation between post-traumatic growth (PTG), spiritual well-being (SWB), perceived social support (PSS), and demographic and clinical factors in Chinese gynecological cancer patients. Through convenience sampling, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 771 adult patients with gynecological cancer. The European Organization for Research and Treatment for Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Spiritual Well-being 32 (EORTC QLQ-SWB32), Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) were used to measure SWB, PTG, and PSS. A Multiple Linear Regression Model was used to determine the possible factors contributing to PTG. The subscale with the highest centesimal score in the PTGI was the Appreciation of Life Scale, and the lowest was New Possibility. Gynecologic cancer patients with younger ages (B =  − 0.313, P = 0.002), perceived more family support (B = 1.289, P < 0.001), had more existential (B = 0.865, P = 0.010), and had religious belief (B = 5.760, P = 0.034) may have more PTG. Spiritual well-being, perceived social support, younger age, and religious beliefs are associated with post-traumatic growth in gynecological cancer patients. Healthcare staff could provide more professional support to younger patients with religious beliefs. Promoting social support and spiritual well-being could potentially serve as effective interventions for boosting PTG among gynecological cancer.

Relations Between Posttraumatic Growth and Fear of Progression Among Young and Middle-Aged Primary Brain Tumor Patients: The Parallel Mediating Role of Perceived Social Support and Illness Uncertainty

This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of perceived social support and illness uncertainty in posttraumatic growth (PTG) and fear of progression (FoP) among young and middle-aged primary brain tumor (PBT) patients. A total of 252 young and middle-aged benign PBT patients were investigated. Data were collected by using self-designed general and disease-related data questionnaires, PTG Inventory, FoP Questinaire-Short Form, Mischel Uncertainty in Illness Scale, and Perceived Social Support Scale. Parallel mediation effect models were used to explore the relationship between PTG and FoP mediation effects. Bootstrap analysis was conducted to examine the mediation effect of PTG on FoP. The total FoP and PTG scores were 35.15±4.85 and 55.04±7.86. Furthermore, mediation effect analyses revealed that perceived social support and illness uncertainty were partially associated with the mediated relationship between PTG and FoP. (std.β=-0.026, P-value=0.001, std. β=-0.393, P value ＜0.001, respectively). Illness uncertainty and perceived social support were identified as partially parallel mediators between PTG and FoP. Thus, we should ensure adequate social support and improve the enthusiasm and input of family members for better patient recovery. Strengthening the nursing support, reducing the uncertainty of young and middle-aged PBT patients, and improving the patients' PTG can help reduce the fear of disease progression.
